Questions I get often include, how do I get started freelancing? and How can I make more money on the side?
The truth is everyone wants to make more money on the side. Everybody wishes they could turn skills into money in a recurring way. And in this day and age, it is possible.
There is only one thing stopping you and it’s not where you’re from, what you do, or what you currently have, especially if you are on the internet reading this article. It means you have access.
What’s stopping you is not that you don’t know what to do or how to get started. If that is the case, I apologise for how this article has started. These are two good courses you should start with (One, Two). They teach two important aspects of starting online businesses. The first focuses on freelancing, and the second on dropshipping.
If that wasn’t your stumbling block, then you definitely do not need to listen to or read another article, or find another course, or get a mentor to help you “design your life” the way you want.
What you need to do is decide what you want to do. It’s the first step to setting yourself apart in this social media age where we see so much of other people’s successes that most people do not know what they want to be anymore.
What you need to do is decide on what you want to do.
You see successful bloggers, successful startup founders, successful doctors, models, influencers, married ones, and those who seemingly thrive without particularly working or doing anything.
So you have all these imagery in your head added to your current reality. And these make up your dreams and goals, without you intentionally choosing to be and do.
So you wake up most mornings, ready to make money, thinking about all the things you could be doing but are still not, and your attention is divided.
To get started as a freelancer or the next best version of you; you need to be and do three things:
Be intentional. Pick out what exactly you want to do and focus. You have one goal. And it doesn’t have to be for the rest of your life. It could be for the next six months. Like, I’m going to be a writer for the next six months. Why? Because I want to publish a book at the end of the next six months. So that means I have to write OR I’m going to freelance for the next six months. Why? To see how much money or progress I can make and if there’s any point having it in my head as a possible career option. So that means I have to get freelance jobs.
Your decision doesn’t have to affect the rest of your life. You don’t have to make irreversible changes. But you can be intentional and fix a time frame.
Like I said earlier, if you’re reading this article, you already have access, access to the worldwideweb, which means access to all information you need to get informed on any subject.
You don’t need to find a brand new course on how to become a freelancer for 2019. The ones created for 2017 and 2018 are still relevant. There are hundreds of sources that cover all aspects of your interests – On Coursera, Udemy, Skillshare, Lynda, Udacity and all the others.
With intentionality, what you do is learn, and then practice what you learn. Being intentional makes you results-oriented, instead of flailing through life.
Next thing you have to be and do is be original because your originality is your DNA. It is your chance against everyone else. Without your originality, you’re like everyone else. So your best chance at winning is to put your originality into what you have decided to do in (1) above. This could be your personality or it could be an actual skill. It could be your thoughts, the way you act or even the way you look.
Whatever it is, own it and insert it into what you choose to do. Put your DNA in your goals.
The last thing you need to complete the trio and start towards the life you want but can’t seem to get is commitment.
When I say commitment, I mean dogged commitment. Keep doing what you said you would do for the amount of time you said you would do it, trying different ways, not giving up, and trying as hard as you can.
There’s a quote that says, “Do or do not; there is no try.” And that’s what we’re saying here.
I believe there’s no way anyone does all three of these, and doesn’t grow and make obvious progress over time.
What’s more: you get to make your life an adventurous, interesting, special, one-of-a-kind type–one that inspires others.
I’m not there yet, but I write this for me and everyone who needs a boost to move toward worthy goals again.
I hope these three things change our lives: Intentionality, Originality and Commitment.
